Tour a lighthouse, or two or three during Maine’s fifth annual Open Lighthouse Day. On Sept. 14, lighthouses throughout the state will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with free admission. The event, coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard in partnership with the Maine Office of Tourism and the American Lighthouse Foundation, showcases 22 lighthouses along the coast of Maine. .

“Tourism is one of our biggest industries, and I am proud to have the opportunity to show off our great state,” said Maine Gov. Paul R. LePage.  “My administration is committed to improving Maine’s competitiveness, to not only attract more visitors, but also to create a better climate for investment and job growth.”

Maine boasts more lighthouse than any other U.S. except Michigan and New York. Beginning in 1794, lighthouses were built to help navigate mariners through dangerous waters and Maine’s many little islands, ledges and shoals.  By the turn of the 20th century, at least 70 lighthouses guarded Maine’s seacoast, deepest rivers and even one lake.  Today, 65 of those lighthouses still stand.

Over the decades, Maine’s iconic lighthouses have become more than directional aids.  They’ve developed a distinctive look with architectural beauty and proportion that also speak to Yankee ingenuity.

Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa is an award-winning resort on Coconut Road in Bonita Springs, Florida, on the Gulf Coast between Naples and Fort Myers. The property, with 26 acres of tropical landscaping, multiple water slides and numerous dining venues, is a beautiful resort. Last month, I brought my 13-year-old grandson to the property for two days of water-sliding in balmy mid-December weather.
