Visiting Rockford, Ill.

by John Wroblewski

Oct 29, 2014

I went to Rockford, Ill., for a weekend built around hockey, but I also enjoyed some of the other fine attractions there. The Rockford IceHogs are the top minor league affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks.

It is a great way to see exciting hockey and future Blackhawks. As I like to say, the IceHogs of today are the Blackhawks of tomorrow. A large number of the fans attending Sunday’s game came dressed in costume in a pre-Halloween celebration. The IceHogs sent everyone home happy by beating the Lake Erie Monsters 5-2 in a fast-paced game.

I really like the BMO Harris Bank Center because of great sightlines, solid food choices and a very helpful staff. The fans are knowledgeable and respectful. The prices are very reasonable, too. It’s just a fun experience.

Zip Rockford offers several different ziplining options, including a double-decker zipline. One of the most popular features is the Indiana Jones-esque suspension bridge. We had perfect weather for this type of outdoor adventure. The Midway Village Museum celebrates Rockford’s history, including an exhibit featuring the Rockford Peaches, the female baseball team immortalized in A League of Their Own. I surprised myself by getting lost in the rich history of this region presented here. Of course, no trip to Rockford would be complete without a meal at Dos Reales. The atmosphere, portions and options are great, but their flavorful sauces put this one over the top.

An easy hour drive west of Chicago, going to Rockford is almost like going to downtown Chicago. Exciting hockey brings me to Rockford, but I have really started to enjoy all else Rockford offers.

Set Off on a Tour of Extraordinary Mechanical Clocks Around the World

It’s approaching 3 o’clock in the afternoon in Bern. Jutting slightly into view at the end of the uneven stone street in the Swiss city’s historic heart stands a medieval tower adorned with the famous 15th-century “time bell,” Zytglogge. A small gathering forms at the tower’s base as the clock prepares to announce the hour — an event heralded by the crowing of a golden rooster, music and a dance of mechanical figures that include an assortment of jolly bears.
