The Morphing Hotel

by John Wroblewski

Nov 3, 2010

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the Jules Undersea Lodge, an underwater hotel. This morning, I came across the other end of the spectrum — a floating hotel.

The Morphotel isn’t a reality yet, but it is a project in the development stages. Italian architect Gianluca Santosuosso created the idea for the Indian Navy Docks of Greater Mumbai. The Morphotel is a morph of a luxury hotel and a cruise ship. It would float around the world, stopping at various ports to pick up supplies and let off or on new passengers.

The key characteristic of the Morphotel is its flexible spine. This would allow the shape to change depending upon the needs. This is accomplished by changing the location of the interlocking wings, some of which could even be completely detached, allowing them to float somewhat freely by themselves.

Its detractors question the length of trips, the one-way trips and the sea-worthiness of such a creation. There is also a question about the future addition of a casino on board.

The supporters argue that this is not meant to be an alternative for a cruise ship. It is (as it states) for long journeys from Point A to wherever, with no immediate return. Also, the design ensures more safety on the seas than regular cruise ships. Finally, the rumors of casinos are only rumors and not part of the plan.

Who knows if the Morphotel will ever become reality? Obviously, it has more issues to overcome than the average new construction luxury hotel. I do think if Morphotel doesn’t make it, something like it will. Developers are always looking for new and creative hotel ideas, and this is certainly one.

Remarkable Medellín

Visiting Medellín in Colombia: The Country of Beauty is like stepping into a fantastic story — literally, as the city in the Western Colombian Andes region inspired Disney’s Encanto. Here, valleys, the world’s tallest palms, vibrant communities, colorful houses, garden-like balconies and more prove reality is more picturesque than anything on film. And it’s especially more tempting following Medellín’s remarkable transformation, shedding its troubled past and reawakening as a city of innovation, art, cultural richness, modern infrastructure, thriving tourism and resiliency.
