The Greatest Love for Whitney

Once again we traveled across the border to Milwaukee Repertory Theater. This time, our show of choice was The Greatest Love for Whitney, celebrating the career of Whitney Houston.

From her emergence on the music scene in the late 1970s to her early death in 2012, Houston enjoyed a legendary career. Nicknamed “the Voice,” she is one of the bestselling music artists of all time, selling more than 200 million records. Her résumé includes two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 16 Billboard Music Awards and 28 Guinness World Records.

Whitney is a two-woman show with accompanist Dan Kazemi. A trio of vocalists comprised of Alina Cherone, Charlotte Odusanya and Milwaukee’s own Alesia Miller perform the songs, but only two take the stage each show. After witnessing the powerful performances of Whitney’s songs, I understand why one woman needs to rest her voice each night.

The vocalists do not try to be Whitney, but they perform such hits as “I Will Always Love You” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” with the same power and emotion as she did. We got the same chills. Between my Milwaukee friends and us, we saw every combination of the three, and all brought the same spine-tingling vibes.

Running through May 28 in Stackner Cabaret, The Greatest Love for Whitney is one of 12 productions for Milwaukee Repertory Theatre’s 2022–23 season. The 2023–2024 season, its 70th season, starts Sep. 8 with Country Sunshine: The Legendary Ladies of Nashville With Katie Deal. Other productions include Run Bambi Run, Dial M for Murder and Nuncrackers.

Houston was one of my favorite singers in my lifetime. The Greatest Love for Whitney does a fantastic job of bringing her songs and spirit to life.
