Wednesday night was the debut of CHI-Together at Soldier Field in Chicago. Hosted by Fueled Events, CHI-Together “is not just a drive-in theater … this is a drive-in entertainment experience!” stated Tionna Van Gundy, owner, Fueled Events.
Held in Soldier Field‘s south lot Wednesday through Sunday evenings, each CHI-Together event starts at 7 p.m. with a 90-minute music set by a local DJ or musician, followed by a movie shown on three jumbo screens at 8:30 p.m. The $55 ticket price for each car (up to six people) also includes a bucket of popcorn. Cars are appropriately spaced apart and there is an area for socially distanced pedestrians, too.
Opening night featured Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray, Chicago’s hometown favorite. Van Gundy described it as the “opening night COVID irony classic.” Future movies include Mission Impossible, The Breakfast Club, Beverly Hills Cop and more.
Not only is CHI-Together creating entertainment for Chicagoans, it created jobs. Van Gundy told me, “We are a small woman-owned business that pivoted in the times of COVID. CHI-Together was created to provide working opportunities for our team and to give a sense of “togetherness” to the city of Chicago … all while being socially safe! Not only have we been able to employ our team, but this project has now created more than 75 jobs and counting and positively affected 10-plus Chicago companies!!”
CHI-Together is also about giving back to the community. A portion of each ticket sold is donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. That’s especially important during this Covid-19 pandemic. Attendees are also encouraged to donate canned goods.
Next up is School of Rock, starring Jack Black and Joan Cusack (another popular Chicagoan) on Wednesday. I suggest going downtown early for a good meal. Then head over to Soldier Field for a night of music on and off the big screens.
