In the world of private clubs, it helps to know someone. Recently, on a business trip to Atlanta to see some important clients, our CEO/publisher was able to secure a reservation at The Cherokee Club, based on a referral from his Union League membership in Philadelphia. This private social club in northwest Atlanta has been functioning since 1956 and has two locations. One is the Golf Country Club and the other is the Town Club — where we went.
We had dinner reservations for the restaurant in the Williams Room, named after some of the founders. Everything was top-class, from the bar in the main lobby to the artwork that filled the halls, as well as the service.
The meal started with warm butter crackers we all enjoyed. I will never forget the appetizer I ordered — a fresh beet salad with whipped honey and wild mushrooms. It was sweet without being too much so, and not a beet fan to begin with, I now think I’ve found a new favorite vegetable. My main course was perfectly seared scallops with a tasty sauce. With some sorbet for dessert, I was full and satisfied.
After our meal we had a nightcap at the downstairs bar and chatted with Craig, the friendly bartender, as well as some long-time club members. The South, known for its warm, friendly residents, definitely lived up to expectations.
