Today the New England Patriots face the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII. Despite not having a team to cheer, I will join millions in watching the big game.
My favorite Super Bowl is an easy pick. On my 21st birthday, the Chicago Bears pounded the Patriots in Super Bowl XX. That was quite a birthday gift from my favorite team, and it was a major celebration for my friends and me.
Unfortunately, with the current stadium, Chicago will never host a Super Bowl. This week’s record-setting temperatures are another deterrent. Atlanta, this year’s host city, has neither of those problems.
Opened in 2017, Mercedes-Benz Stadium holds more than 77,000. The predicted temperature for the weekend is in the high 50s, although with a retractable roof on the stadium it wouldn’t affect the game anyway.
Hotel business is booming in Atlanta. Ranking in the top 10 for most hotel rooms in the United States, most of Atlanta’s 100,000 rooms will be occupied, with the NFL having 20 percent of those. Similar occupancy increases occur in neighboring cities, like Alpharetta, with just four of 26 hotels having any available rooms.
Of course, with demand, prices increase. Atlanta hotels are expected to average a 200 percent rate increase for the weekend. Airbnb will probably surpass that. Last year in Minneapolis, the average Airbnb price was about 3.7 times the usual amount.
Airlines are doing more business, too. As reported on the Global Traveler site, Southwest Airlines added flights on the Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX) and St. Louis (STL) routes.
I am predicting the Patriots prevail 31–27. The real winner is the city of Atlanta and all of the businesses involved.

And it’s especially more tempting following Medellín’s remarkable transformation, shedding its troubled past and reawakening as a city of innovation, art, cultural richness, modern infrastructure, thriving tourism and resiliency.
