Solo Travel Don’ts

by Yasser Ogando

Aug 4, 2019

Tourist couple in Havana, Cuba looking at books together having fun on vacation travel on Plaza de Armas in Old Havana. Young travelers interracial couple, Asian woman, Caucasian man.

This past weekend I was asked what items are left on my bucket list. The answer could be lengthy, but without hesitation, my dream self-discovery trip to Cuba was the first thing to come out of my mouth.

Between the culture, the people, the food, the cars and, most importantly, the limited access to the internet, what’s not to like? Most people would choose a different location for this particular type of travel, but Cuba attracts me because with so little, its people are happy and make the best out of life. Not to mention, it is affordable, safe and will make me connect with my Caribbean heritage and roots.

As solo travelers, there isn’t such a thing as “too much preparation” before an international trip. Experiencing the destination as a local should be the goal, but we often only pay attention to what’s pushed to us on social platforms and our friend’s cousin’s experience — yes, to the millennial reading this, I’m talking to you. It is good to keep in mind that no matter how safe your destination is, there are always precautions to take — especially as a solo female traveler. Luckily for you, Allie Moore gives us some pointers on what not to do in this great article on trazeetravel.com.

Have you recently taken a solo trip? If so, how was your experience? Any tips? Send us your stories to letters@globaltravelerusa.com!

Until next time …

Costa Rica Lures with Modern Amenities, Rural Charm and a Simple Way of Life

When I first visited Costa Rica, I was ostensibly there for business. But after a few days in this tropical paradise, my trip started to feel more like a vacation than work. This isn’t to say I neglected my obligations, rather that my work meetings felt more pleasurable (and productive) than usual. The gorgeous jungle landscape combined with the pura vida lifestyle is a simply infectious combination, and it’s unsurprising the nation consistently ranks as the most popular tourist destination in Central America.
