For the first time since 2019, the Skokie Festival of Cultures made a full return. After missing 2020 and holding mini-events in 2021, the annual event was greeted with huge crowds this weekend.
Debuting in 1990, Skokie Festival of Cultures is the product of a village ethnic diversity project. Promoting a better understanding of different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds, several village organizations came together to start the yearly event. The two-day festival showcases many cultures through music, art, food and more.
With perfect weather, we made the one-mile walk from my place to Oakton Park. Walking was the right choice, as the parking lot was already filled before the returning fest opened.
We started the day enjoying a performance by the West Indian Dance Theater Company, followed by Renancer Boliviano Dance Troup. The food offered was definitely several steps up from standard fest fare. We took a break to go to the Northwestern softball game but returned to see the Tierra Colombiana Dance Ensemble and an impressive Tae Kwon Do demonstration from Master Jay.
While it was great having such a beautiful day to kick off the summer fest schedule, the best part was seeing such diverse folks all together sharing the experience. In addition to the entertainment and fun of the fest, we left with a positive feeling.
