On Saturday, Global Traveler associate editor/copy editor Patty Vanikiotis wrote about her day with creatures from the deep sea. In October the John G. Shedd Aquarium has a unique offer of 12 free admission days for Illinois residents. As part of the Illinois Resident Free Days program, every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are free with proof of residency. Tickets must also be reserved online or by phone.

All COVID-19 safety precautions are followed, including a limited visitor capacity, one-way passageways, hand sanitizing stations and social distancing, according to Shedd assistant director of public relations Johnny Ford. Patrons must also arrived at a scheduled time and have timed visits. There is a new, very detailed visitor info video on the Shedd website.

Opened in 1930, the Shedd Aquarium at one point was the largest indoor aquarium in the world. The 5 million gallon aquarium houses 32,000 animals. Shedd Aquarium was the first inland aquarium with a permanent saltwater fish collection. It is part of the Museum Campus Chicago on Lake Michigan just south of downtown Chicago.

Current exhibits include Underwater Beauty and seasonal Stingray Touch. Some small area exhibits are temporarily closed, as are animal touching exhibits.

Despite some changes in the visitor experience, a day at the Shedd Aquarium is still a fun time for all ages. Illinois Resident Free Days are the best time for a day with the fish and other sea creatures.
