Calling all fans of pop-ups and groovy vibes! A true oasis popped up in Palos Verdes, California. Cue roller skating, ’70s tunes and glittery threads. My friend Nina and I wound our way up to South Coast Botanic Garden and were so ready to relive our childhood roller skating days.

Getting to the event is pretty straightforward. There is plenty of parking, and event staff will help you make your way to the ticketed entrance. Walking in, you see the beautiful greenery of the botanical garden itself. There’s clearly marked signage, so there’s no getting lost as you make your way to the skating rink. There are plenty of Instagrammable stops throughout the hike to center stage. Once you arrive, it’s like you’ve been transported to a different world. We got tickets for 6:30 p.m., so we got to see the sun set while we skated in the middle of the not-so-secret garden. Your ticket fee includes skate rental, but I took this opportunity to take my pandemic skates out. I’d wanted skates for the longest time, and (yet another good thing that came from the pandemic was the revival of roller skating) I found the perfect pair at Impala Skates.
The event was really well-organized. With all the people attending, they have to make sure everyone gets a chance to skate without it being too crowded. They will stop the skating for a dance show with a ’70s hit. Around the main area of the event there is plenty of entertainment for when you’ve skated your little heart out. There’s a dance floor, photo booths, an arcade with throwback games, a beer garden for the adults and even a taco truck!
