This past week my colleague Erich Martin and I attended Media Day at Philadelphia International Airport to get a behind-the-scenes look at some recent updates, along with a briefing from PHL execs on what lies ahead. The day started with a presentation from PHL leadership that concluded with words from Rochelle Cameron, chief executive officer. Rochelle, who goes by Chellie, told us about the many projects currently underway at the airport, lots of them focused on improving the guest experience. Some things to keep an eye out for in the future include new air service, restaurants, cargo development and a $2.7 billion capital development program.
One thing I found particularly interesting is how the airport is getting ready for the implementation of Real ID in October 2020 for Pennsylvania residents. Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued enhanced driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States. Due to the inevitable fact not everyone will have this come October, many disruptions are expected, and PHL is doing its part to ensure a smooth transition.
Philadelphia International Airport saw a number of statistical increases in 2019 and, after a great year, looks to better itself even more headed into 2020. Total traffic, plane movements and air freight and cargo were up, pointing to how more travelers opt to go through PHL instead of the many other nearby airports.
The day ended with a tour of a few terminals, the airfield and the airport ramp tower, which provided a great view of the city. Even if you are only passing through for a layover, PHL captures Philadelphia’s personality through its shops, restaurants and art displays. Thanks again to PHL leadership for hosting.
