The past few years I have seen him on his acoustic tour with his son in small venues, performing with a full rock band and last year with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The Raw Tour is full of storytelling and songs, mostly familiar standbys such as “Baby I Love Your Way,” “Do You Feel Like We Do” and “Show Me the Way” but also new songs such as “Hummingbird in a Box,” dedicated to his parents, Owen and Peggy, and lifelong friend David Bowie.
His son, Julian, opens for him and joins him later for one song. Gordon Kennedy is Peter’s writing partner, playing with him throughout the set. Kennedy wrote “Change the World,” an Eric Clapton hit in the early ’90s. Peter Frampton remains a guitar virtuoso and never fails to deliver a remarkable performance, even during the two disturbances that erupted in the surprisingly rowdy crowd.
The concert was at the St. George Theatre on Staten Island, a venue new to me even though I have attended concerts in the New York tri-state area for decades.
The small, 1,800-seat theater was built in 1929 as a vaudeville theater to compete with the best in Manhattan. Designed in a Spanish and Italian Baroque style, the majestic and ornate theater still features large-scale murals of bullfights and rural villages, stained glass, balconies, niches with golden statues and gold columns, rosettes and dramatic staircases. Like many theaters of this era, it was saved from demolition by caring patrons and is now a nonprofit theater with a roster of formerly famous performers that can still draw a devoted fan base.
Upcoming shows include Jackson Browne, Chaka Khan and Dennis DeYoung of Styx. The theater is easy to get to from New Jersey and close to the Staten Island Ferry. There is a reasonable parking garage — $8 — a block away.
Peter Frampton continues the RAW tour throughout the year and will be playing with his full band this summer, headlining with Steve Miller.
