Yesterday was supposed to be the season opener for the Northwestern Wildcats football team. Because old habits die hard, I found myself at Ryan Field anyway.
Wearing my Northwestern shirt, I made the five mile run to Ryan Field. Of course, the stadium was empty, making it quite a sad sight for a September Saturday. By now, Mustard’s Last Stand was open. Located adjacent to the stadium, Mustard’s is a local favorite. Family-run, Mustard’s has been serving fantastic burgers, hot dogs and more since 1969.
On a regular game day, the line would stretch down the block. There was still a short line, but seeing everyone wearing Northwestern face masks made me smile beneath mine. It also created an opening for football talk. As we ate our food on the patio, we continued discussing our favorite players and games.
As usual, I ordered a turkey burger with cheese, fries and a Coke. The burger was fresh and juicy, cooked to perfection and lightly seasoned. The gooey cheese added flavor and texture. Mustard’s always has excellent fountain Coke. It’s one of my favorite Coke spots in the Chicago area.
After I finished eating, I walked around the stadium, Wildcat Alley and Sharon J. Drysdale Softball Field, soaking in the memories of many games and fun times. I have met a lot of great players here and made many friends among the fans and staff. I could almost hear players on the field and the cheers from the fans in the stands.
After a full loop of the area, I was ready for the run back home. As I made my way home, I somehow felt more positive. Even though I really miss Northwestern football days, just being on campus made things better.
Northwestern sports will return, and I will be back to enjoy the full experience. Until then, this might become my regular Saturday no-game experience.
