Museum of Ice Cream

Ordinarily, I wouldn’t have ice cream for breakfast, but I made an exception last Sunday. While at Museum of Ice Cream, I had to indulge in several servings.Museum of Ice Cream

MOIC opened in Chicago last July, to coincide with National Ice Cream Day. Chicago became the fourth city for MOIC, joining New York City, Austin and Singapore. Located in The Shops at Tribune Towers, MOIC is 13,500 square feet devoted to the sweet frozen treat.Museum of Ice Cream

The tour starts with a brief explanation aboard the Sprink-L, a pink nod to Chicago’s iconic elevated trains. Once you step off the replica train, I meandered through 14 exhibits, including five stops for ice cream samples (each with vegan and allergen-free options).Museum of Ice Cream

The first stop was a shop of cocktails and ice cream. I would have been quite happy spending the day right there.Museum of Ice Cream

A zodiac flavor profile was one of the stations. As an Aquarius, my profile is part sweet, salty and floral. I must say, I was disappointed with my lucky toppings of rainbow sprinkles and caramel sauce, while my Sagittarius pal had frozen mango chunks and candied oranges. Clearly, he won that round.Museum of Ice Cream

The Inside Scoop wall had 32 scoop models under which are ingredients and a bit of other info. The Flavor Wall listed 231 flavors along with depictions. There was also a mini-golf hole requiring skillful putting around giant desserts. The ice cream lab is where the magic happens: The treats are created.Museum of Ice Cream

The tour ends at a 56-foot-long sprinkles pool. I admit I wasn’t paying attention and found myself sinking in thousands of plastic sprinkles, but that only added to the fun. Most folks did more traditional dives into the pool.Museum of Ice Cream

Last Halloween season, MOIC turned into Museum of I-Scream for additional scary fun. There are future special events planned but not revealed yet.Museum of Ice Cream

MOIC was ranked in the top 10 most Instagram-able museums by The Smithsonian Institute. We helped that ranking by posting several pictures on our pages.Museum of Ice Cream

Despite being dedicated to ice cream, you don’t have to love the dessert to enjoy MOIC, but it helps. Either way, it is a fun experience.

A World of Wellness

According to Merriam-Webster, wellness, a noun, is defined as “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal.” As the definition states and as the travel industry knows, wellness reaches far beyond just simply being not sick; for some, the idea of wellness is an entire lifestyle. Wellness is sought daily, at home and, for many, while traveling. The meaning of the word can also shape-shift depending on the person. Maybe for you it’s morning meditation every day, while for your neighbor it’s splurging on a luxury spa day while on a beach vacation.

As usual, we have a lot going on at Global Traveler. We are about to start our efforts with the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center Roundup Gala, to be held Oct. 24 in Philadelphia. The organization asked me to serve as cochair with John Kelley, a member of the Advisory Board of FXExpress Publications, Inc. Last year’s event surpassed that of 2023, so we have big shoes to fill for 2025.

What’s New in Luxury Travel in Rome

Rome has always been a destination for art, history and culture, but, until recently, true luxury hospitality in the Eternal City was surprisingly limited. Five-star hotels existed, but the selection was small, often traditional and rarely pushed the boundaries of modern luxury. That’s changing fast. In 2025, a wave of new openings, high-profile renovations and bold hospitality concepts redefines what it means to stay in Rome. According to Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, Rome’s hotel occupancy far exceeds the European average, and Rome responded by investing more than 450 million euros in the city’s hotels in 2024 to meet the growing demand for exceptional experiences. Last month, I attended the inaugural edition of RISE Rome, a premier event dedicated to the city’s luxury hospitality sector, to catch up on the latest updates and newest trends shaping the city. Here are highlights from some of the city’s top stays.
