I was saddened by the recent announcement the National Football League would not have mascots at games this season. With health concerns and no fans to entertain, I understand the decision, but I will miss seeing the fuzzy creatures.
The announcement brought back memories of my time as a mascot. The title of this is slightly misleading, as my time as a mascot was far from a day. In fact, it wasn’t even for part of a game. Still, it was a bucket-list moment for me.
Several years ago I was at the Ballpark in Rosemont, interviewing National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits prior to a game, when word spread in the office that the person who usually played the part of Swiper, the Bandits mascot, was stuck in traffic. With the stadium gates opening, there was nobody to take his place . . . or was there?
Of course, I immediately offered my services. Staffers thought I was joking, but I was totally serious. Not only was I willing, I really wanted to don the costume and put “mascot” on my resume. I have always had a fascination with mascots. One of my greatest thrills was meeting the Chicken, perhaps the most well-known mascot.
After holding out as long as possible and debating my offer, staffers led me to Swiper’s suit. My moment was arriving.
As I put on the costume, I quickly realized the head was heavy and limited vision. This would be a bit more challenging than I anticipated. I knew I wouldn’t be able to be nearly as active as the regular Swiper, but I figured I could at least interact with the fans.
After a few rounds through the stands, a staffer approached and told me the regular portrayer had arrived and my time as Swiper was done. As I walked back to the offices, stopping for a few fan photos, I was both relieved and saddened. While I enjoyed my time as Swiper, I knew I wouldn’t be able to do all of the routines the regular Swiper did. Fortunately, my time as Swiper ended before my inexperience showed.
Mascots have gone from being good luck charms for teams to being part of the entertainment experience. They work hard and are great ambassadors for sports teams and other organizations. From my short time as Swiper, I gained a whole new appreciation for the folks who bring them to life.
