Vamos! Vai! Allez! Let’s go, you can do it! These were only a few of the words of support I heard chanted throughout the streets of Manhattan on Sunday during the ING New York City Marathon. Each year, I write about how much I love marathon weekend, and this weekend was even better than the last.
The weather was perfect. Over 47,000 people from around the world put their best running feet forward to finish the 26.2 miles across the five boroughs of New York City. Running was never my forte, so I admit I don’t understand the urge to run 26.2 miles. I tip my hat to those who do and happily stand on the sidelines cheering them on.
Early in the day I watched the elite runners go by mile 25 and saw the amazing men and women break speed records. I had a good laugh as my neighbor turned to me as the lead male, Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya, whizzed by all by himself, and said, “Well, only 46,000 people more to go!”
Later in the day, I experienced an extra thrill as I was able to cheer my friend on as he passed mile 25, looking amazingly fresh. While I waited for him to pass on Central Park South, I got dizzy watching all the runners. Thanks to the technology of the tracking system, I was able to track him the whole way and actually spotted him on the south side of the park. I shouted his name, and he saw me. I think we were both amazed to catch a glimpse of each other. Without the tracking system, I really don’t think I would have caught him fly by.
I would like to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to my friend Michael, who ran his first marathon and raised money for the charity, Children’s Tumor Foundation. To all of those who ran in this year’s marathon, congratulations. A special note to Michael — you are an inspiration, and I am so proud of you!
