Last week Los Angeles International Airport replaced all 2,300 bins at TSA security checkpoints. The new bins are designed to reduce germs and speed up the screening process.
Designed by Microban with Security Point Media, the bins use materials that prevent the buildup of bacteria. The antimicrobial treatment prevents bacteria growth on the surfaces. LAX spokesman Heath Montgomery said bin bacteria isn’t a huge issue, but the new bins will improve the overall cleanliness of LAX and ease fears of contracting diseases.
The individually numbered bins are about the same size as the old ones but are slimmer and not as deep. This allows less stacking of items, thereby making it easier for screeners to identify all items in each bin more quickly. The numbering system helps screeners more quickly locate any bin that needs further inspection.
There is no cost to LAX. JCDecaux Global is providing the bins through an advertising agreement.
