It’s Weird Out There

by Patty Mahlon

Feb 16, 2008

Is it  just me, or are things a little weird out there in the world of travel? I keep seeing stories presented in matter-of-fact fashion that make you say, “What??!” For example: Take this commentary on machismo–Mexico City has begun offering some women-only buses on its public transport system. Reuters called them “grope-free buses.” Seems women were getting really tired of being felt up and fondled, as well as verbally assaulted, on the co-ed system. And it’s not even a new concept: the first three cars of trains in Mexico City are already reserved for women and children.  Wonder how that would go over on the NYC subway system…  The Germans, on the other hand, seem to be more comfortable with their sexuality. So comfortable, in fact, that there is now a nudist airline, sort of. Travel agency OssiUrlaub.de is running charter flights to a nudist resort on the Baltic Sea. Again according to Reuters, managing director Enrico Hess said that the small aircraft’s  55 passengers will have to remain clothed until they board, and dress before disembarking, adding, “The crew will remain clothed throughout the flight for safety reasons.” And there’s a new airline–an offshoot of Air Arabia–that’s flying between Kuala Lumpur, Shariah, and Kathmandu. Given the Nepalese destination, can you guess the name? Yup, you got it: It’s FlyYeti.com.  Just in case you need some cocktail party chat for the weekend…  –Mary Hunt, editor, eFlyer
