Indianapolis Food Favorites

by John Wroblewski

Jul 16, 2019

Last weekend while attending a convention in Indianapolis, I enjoyed meals at a couple of my favorite restaurants. I also discovered an old favorite from another city opened a location downtown.

Several years ago, we accidentally found Pasquale’s. Located at the back corner of a strip mall, it is a bit difficult to find, but it is well worth the effort. The pizza is the right balance of crispy with gooey cheese. The staff is friendly and the service is quick, but make time to order the garlic bread as an appetizer.

El Rodeo came highly recommended and is always fantastic. I was working my way through the extensive menu, but the fish tacos were so good last time, I had to repeat the order this time. Filled with fresh chunks of fish and loaded with cheese and lettuce, the fish tacos are flavorful and light but still filling. I highly recommend the chili mango margarita, especially on a warm summer night.

Founded in Pittsburgh in 1933, Primanti Bros. is a famous sandwich shop known for stacking fries and oil- and vinegar-based coleslaw on sandwiches. While on an early morning run around downtown Indianapolis, I was surprised to see a Primanti Bros. location, and we returned for lunch. The fully loaded sandwich is a unique concept, and the flavors push it well beyond just being a gimmick. Since they are in Indianapolis, I hope they continue to expand west into Chicago.

My convention trips to Indianapolis are usually short, and I stick to my two main dinner spots. I am going to have to stay an extra day sometime to try a new dinner place.
