At 108 years old, Chicago’s Wrigley Field has seen a lot of history. Yesterday my friends and I brought our own history to the park to celebrate the 30th anniversary of a historic baseball movie.
My friend Tom and I met in first grade 51 years ago and went through 12 years of school together. We went our separate ways after high school, but we remain close after all these years. We get together a couple times a year, with one time always being at a Cubs game. This year we were joined by another friend from high school.
Wrigley Field has changed dramatically since our youth. While once a beautiful but no-frills stadium, it is now the centerpiece of an entertainment destination. Baseball is almost secondary.
It was A League of Their Own Day at Wrigley, saluting the 30th anniversary of one of my favorite movies. Many of the baseball scenes were filmed at Wrigley. Pregame, former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player Maybelle Blair and cast members from the iconic movie, including Megan Cavanagh, Ann Cusack, Patti Pelton, Anne Ramsay and Tracy Reiner, were honored, with Chicago native Cusack singing the National Anthem.
We have seen too many losses over the years, but on this day the Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2–0. The real winners were Tom, Steve and I because of our many years of friendship.
