Happy Birthday to Me!

Obligatory selfie on the giant beach chair in Vieques.

This year for the birthday celebration we headed to Puerto Rico. This was our first visit to the island; what an adventure it was!

birthday

Exceptional view from our room.

We have discovered we really love island life; so while we made our way to an island, we went even further to explore surrounding islands. There are so many gems around the main Puerto Rico island, and it is so easy to make your way. We made our way around aboard the Puerto Rico Ferry, which made it so easy for us to go about our own schedule.

For those who don’t mind roughing it for a day or two, Vieques is a great experience. We found a cute little hotel in the hills of the island; it made for a great refuge when Beryl came through in the middle of the night.

During our time in Vieques we enjoyed a lot of beaches practically to ourselves and night kayaking to see the bioluminescence. I cannot say which was my favorite. What a magical landscape of picturesque beaches, wild horses and refreshing piña coladas!

Perfect beach in Vieques.

Back on the main Puerto Rico island, we had a chance to see so much, as we had a rental car. We explored Old San Juan, which was absolutely beautiful. The partial fortress surrounding this was the best respite from the heat as the ocean breeze was perfect. We enjoyed watching people flying their kites in the middle of the day.

We truly enjoyed the best the island has to offer.

Set Off on a Tour of Extraordinary Mechanical Clocks Around the World

It’s approaching 3 o’clock in the afternoon in Bern. Jutting slightly into view at the end of the uneven stone street in the Swiss city’s historic heart stands a medieval tower adorned with the famous 15th-century “time bell,” Zytglogge. A small gathering forms at the tower’s base as the clock prepares to announce the hour — an event heralded by the crowing of a golden rooster, music and a dance of mechanical figures that include an assortment of jolly bears.
