In March, I visited Lima. On the night of our arrival, my group went to Astrid y Gastón for dinner. The dinner was absolutely delicious, but one of the courses that really intrigued me, despite not eating meat, was the guinea pig appetizer. In the United States we see guinea pigs as pets, but in Peru the small rodent is a delicacy.
This gave me an idea to explore for Trazee Travel. Next month, there is an article I wrote about interesting meats people eat all over the world. These are pretty predictable, depending on the region, but a few that surprised me included armadillos and eland. As with guinea pigs, I never considered armadillos to be substantive enough — or appetizing enough — to eat.
Another one that kind of had me scratching my head, although much less so than the guinea pigs and armadillos, is unagi eel in New Zealand.
Although I don’t eat meat, it is interesting to see what kinds of animals people around the world eat. Check out the exotic meat market to see what other people eat, and look for the Trazee Travel article next month.

Santiago is divided into comunas (districts) and then into barrios (neighborhoods). Founded in 1541 by Spain, Santiago suffered repeatedly from earthquakes, floods and civil disorder. It is no wonder its barrios are unique and distinct — some with steep terrain crawling up into the foothills of the Andes, some sitting close to the urban center and boasting busy cafés, music clubs, restaurants, food markets, and new residential and commercial high-rises.
