It’s heating up in Los Angeles, and like many Angelenos, we are flocking to cooler pastures with our families to enjoy some summer experiences.
This weekend I was pleasantly surprised to find my favorite childhood beach, Zuma Beach, in Malibu, California, was not overly crowded. We were able to enjoy the sun, see some dolphins and relax while socially distanced. This weekend got me thinking of other destinations that sit along water to add to my list!
Lake Tahoe, California, located against the Sierra Nevada Mountains, is popular both for summer and winter vacations. Fun fact: It’s about 2 million years old (among the 20 oldest lakes in the world). Both North and South Lake Tahoe have numerous beaches, meadows and hiking trails for families. The resorts are often pricey and sold out during summer, but VRBO is a great option for home rentals.
Crater Lake, Oregon, is definitely a bucket-list drive for me. Known as the deepest lake in the United States, it was formed from an ancient volcanic eruption more than 7,000 years ago. Families are able to take boat tours of Wizard Island and fish for salmon and trout in the collapsed volcano. How cool!
I have heard of the Finger Lakes in New York from my East Coast colleagues for years, and after a bit more research, a visit there is something I need to try. The area hosts more than 100 vintners, many with tasting rooms on the waterfront, making it a wine enthusiast’s dream. It will be interesting to compare against my many Napa Valley experiences.
What lakes do you recommend for a summer or fall trip?

One example is the early 20th-century Pakhuis Santos, the Santos “coffee” Warehouse in Rotterdam’s port area. This former coffee warehouse is currently being transformed into the new home of Nederlands Fotomuseum (Dutch Photo Museum) and will reopen to the public in mid-2025. The architectural firms involved in the design and transformation include Renner Hainke Wirth Zirn Architekten from Hamburg, together with WDJARCHITECTEN from Rotterdam.
