Every year I look forward to Flashback Weekend. This year I had one of the best times.
Flashback Weekend is Chicago’s largest and longest-running horror convention. I often describe it as having all the positives of a bigger convention while retaining a small con feel. That is a testament to organizers Mike and Mia Kerz.
Since attending the first Flashback Weekend in 2002, I have seen it grow in size and popularity. The credit goes to the Kerzes and their hard-working staff, which includes their two daughters, whom I have also seen grow to adults over the years. Passionate and hands-on, they work to make sure all runs well.
This year saw the most attendees, including many of my friends. I started my visit with my friend Chuck, ended with my friend Tony, and had several combinations of friends in between. It was a revolving door as friends came and went, depending on what events they wanted to see. I see more friends here than at any other convention.

Along with my attendee friends, I caught up with my creator friends. Folks — like artists Kurt Dinse and Chad Savage, actor James Azrael of the Horror and Sci-Fi Prop Preservation Association, WGN contributor Nick Digilio and several others — have become friends from several years of chatting at Flashback Weekend.

Of course there was an impressive celebrity lineup headlined by a reunion of the cast from The Warriors. There were panels, a costume contest, special movie screenings and other fun events.

Chicago horror icon Svengoolie also made his usual appearance.
Although I enjoy everything at Flashback Weekend, experiencing it with my friends is the best part for me. More than anything, Flashback Weekend feels like a big friend reunion to me.
