A few weekends ago my husband and I went on a short hike at Woods at Wenonah. The trail takes hikers through the town of Wenonah, New Jersey.
We parked near one of the trailheads and opted to include the loop around Wenonah Lake. It rained the morning before our visit and parts of the trail were still muddy, so we were grateful for our waterproof hiking shoes! Once past the lake, we made our way onto the main part of the trail. Since the trail winds through the town, we had to cross main roads a few times, which felt strange. We both commented it’s not the most kid-friendly trail and decided not to return with our niece and nephew. The trail itself isn’t as well-marked as others we’ve recently visited. Unfortunately, about 1.5 miles into our hike, we ran into a marker saying the rest of the trail was closed due to maintenance. Instead of trying to find a way around the closed section, we opted to end our hike early and grab an early lunch in another town.
We ventured a little farther south to Pitman, New Jersey, for lunch. Since it was a beautiful day, we decided to sit outside at Pizzeria Mannino’s. No one else was sitting outside, so we felt like we had the entire area to ourselves. We split the Frutti Di Mare wood-fired seafood plate to start. It was light, flavorful and a larger portion than we expected. We also split a mushroom pizza. Also delicious, we packed some to take home. Before leaving, I wanted to get ice cream from Alaura Kitchen. I’ve heard great things about the ice cream shop, but this was my first time trying it. Its ice cream flavors change daily, and on our visit, I had a scoop of peanut butter ice cream with Oreo pieces. It was rich and the perfect sweet note to end our day.

Santiago is divided into comunas (districts) and then into barrios (neighborhoods). Founded in 1541 by Spain, Santiago suffered repeatedly from earthquakes, floods and civil disorder. It is no wonder its barrios are unique and distinct — some with steep terrain crawling up into the foothills of the Andes, some sitting close to the urban center and boasting busy cafés, music clubs, restaurants, food markets, and new residential and commercial high-rises.
