Entertainment for Flights

by John Wroblewski

May 1, 2013

I am about to take several airplane trips, and I am well-armed with entertainment for the flights. I have several books I saved for these trips.

I met Joseph B. Spencer at a convention last year. I was so intrigued by his recap of his debut novel Grim, I bought it there. I am really looking forward to reading this gore-filled thriller which is filled with bad guys and even worse guys.

Jim Abbott was a successful major league pitcher, despite being born without a right hand. I would be interested enough in his 2012 book, Imperfect: An Improbable Life, simply as a baseball biography. His story of overcoming the odds to reach the major leagues makes this one very interesting to me.

Actor-director-writer Joe Knetter wrote several books of short stories. Knetter’s books are entertaining but highly twisted and gory. I recently read Room (his latest) and am working my way through the rest, starting now with Vile Beauty.

I am always excited about finding new authors. While Joe Schuster wrote hundreds of articles, reviews, short stories and more, The Might Have Been is his debut novel. It uses baseball as a backdrop to tell a tale of life and second chances.

I enjoyed Brian Freeman’s psychological suspense novels for years. I recently picked up The Bone House, about a falsely accused teacher who winds up in the middle of a murder mystery.

I recently met New York Times bestselling author James Finn Garner, and we talked about Honk Honk, My Darling: A Rex Koko, Private Clown Mystery, his clown noir novel. This sounded so unique and interesting, I had to add it to my reading list.

These books should keep me occupied on the flights, even if there are delays.  Diving into and losing myself in a good book is my favorite way to pass the time on a flight. I have a few more flights for later in the year and am open to suggestions for other good books.

Escape to Tahiti for a Captivating Island-Hopping Cruise

The 118 islands of French Polynesia reveal themselves layer by fascinating layer, with the spirit of mana (vital force) linking them all the way from Tahiti to the remote reaches of the Marquesas. This is part of the world best savored on a journey that dives as deep into culture as natural beauty, both above and below the water’s surface. A cruise makes it easy to cover a lot of ground while unpacking just once (and sneaking in some work done in comfort, too, during at-sea days). And cruising offers particular appeal within this semi-autonomous French territory sprawling across nearly 2 million square miles of ocean and covering five archipelagos.

The Shelbourne Review

Facing the vast St. Stephen’s Green in the heart of Dublin sits the iconic and historic The Shelbourne. Few hotels master the perfect blend of history and luxury, but The Shelbourne gets it right. The site of the signing of the Irish Constitution in 1922 granting the Republic of Ireland its freedom from England, The Shelbourne has hosted its fair share of notable figures, from Michael Collins to Princess Grace Kelly to John Ford, the latter of which was the name of my suite.
