Discovering an Artistic Side?

by Kimberly Inlander

Feb 26, 2021

As I mentioned in my last blogs, my husband and I recently road-tripped across Pennsylvania to visit Nemacolin. With so many activities on offer, it’s nearly impossible to narrow down the choices. The list of activities we wanted to try was LONG, but with only two full days, limited capacities and availability, we narrowed it down some and decided to try our hands at something unfamiliar for both of us: painting.

On Saturday afternoon we took part in the resort’s Pinot and Paint class, held in the on-site art studio. Alongside instruction on painting a wintery scene, the instructor also poured us glasses of Pinot (Grigio or Noir was on offer) — a win-win! I’d done a similar class a few years ago for a friend’s birthday but painting a beach scene. The outcome was “eh,” at best, but it was fun to try something out of my comfort zone.

With only one other couple in the class, masks required and plexiglass separating us from the other couple, everything felt COVID-19 safe. Neither Scott nor I consider ourselves artistic in any way, so we followed all the suggestions and tips from the instructor to the best of our limited abilities but, most importantly, laughing and enjoying ourselves along the way.

You can decide from the photos whether or not we have any artistic skills, but I think both of us were pleased with our final products, knowing what our abilities are and considering we never paint — at least they were discernible and not abstract, even with wine involved.

Overall, we were glad to try something new and expand our horizons.

Remarkable Medellín

Visiting Medellín in Colombia: The Country of Beauty is like stepping into a fantastic story — literally, as the city in the Western Colombian Andes region inspired Disney’s Encanto. Here, valleys, the world’s tallest palms, vibrant communities, colorful houses, garden-like balconies and more prove reality is more picturesque than anything on film. And it’s especially more tempting following Medellín’s remarkable transformation, shedding its troubled past and reawakening as a city of innovation, art, cultural richness, modern infrastructure, thriving tourism and resiliency.
