Dining in Waukesha, Wis.

by John Wroblewski

Dec 9, 2015

Last weekend, I went to Waukesha, Wis., to see my friends performing. Any trip to Wisconsin will always involve cheese and frozen custard, but we had other great food, too.

We had a great Italian meal at Michael’s, starting with crispy goat cheese ravioli, moving onto chicken-Parmesan thin-crust pizza and finishing with delicious cannoli. This was about as close to a perfect meal as one can get!

On Saturday at Le Estacion, we ordered and shared a table-load of tacos, burritos, enchiladas and quesadillas. It was a Mexican feast. I also have to mention their salsa was especially flavorful.

For a sweet frozen custard treat before the show, we stopped at Oscar’s. The flavor of the day was Rudolph’s Peppermint Bark, with dark chocolate, white chocolate and crushed candy canes blended into vanilla custard. It was so good, we had to go back on Sunday for Badger Claw, with hardshell chocolate and roasted pecans swirled into caramel custard. Of course, we had to bring some home for our friends who couldn’t make the trip.

I also stopped at the Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha. This “cheese landmark” is one of the most recognizable and visible spots along Interstate 94. Originally opened in 1947, the Mars Cheese Castle is all about cheese, but it does also sell meats and sweets. It is a must-stop for cheese lovers, and I am one! It was a weekend of fun and great food. I really need to make more trips north of the border.
