Every May, I travel to Novi, Mich., for the Motor City Comic Con. We also always attend a Detroit Tigers game, since Comerica Park is only about 20 miles away.

For the first time in four years, we watched the Tigers lose, but prior to the game, we experienced a bit of history.

The playing field from the original Tiger Stadium is located a few blocks from Comerica Park. Built in 1912, abandoned in 1999 and (mostly) demolished in 2009, Tiger Stadium had been one of the oldest stadiums in sports.

The four of us immediately went to the mound and soaked in the history. Then we split off into different directions, absorbing our own memories. This was especially meaningful for Cuzz, a lifelong Tigers fan, who trotted out to right field, the same right field that his childhood idol (Hall of Famer) Al Kaline patrolled.

So many baseball greats played on this field. Babe Ruth hit his 700^th home run here. It was one of exactly 111,111 home runs hit in the park.

As we were leaving, a bunch of people settled into the former dugout area. They were about to play a game of softball on the field. I was tempted to ask if they needed an extra player.

While I absolutely love the comfort and amenities of the newer ballparks, I couldn’t help but love standing on that historic field.
