Cruising is more than hot right now — it’s on fire!
Cruise lines executives talk about cruising in ways they haven’t before, comparing a family cruise vacation to the likes of major theme parks like Disney or Universal Studios.
There are several things I love about cruising — including how your itinerary is largely laid out before you but you still get the opportunity to choose how you’ll enjoy your time. For me, that’s enough structure and flexibility to make any vacation memorable.
Last fall I enjoyed a three-night cruise from Fort Lauderdale on Celebrity Reflection from Celebrity Cruises. For those who haven’t had much experience cruising, I always recommend balconies and suites. The extra space is always welcome, and the ability to enjoy the ocean breeze from within your own room is much cozier than trying to find a quiet spot on the ship.
Upon entering my Sky Suite for the first time, I thought the layout was ideal, maximizing the space with a king-sized bed, separate couch, coffee table and chair, along with two work stations, flat-screen TV and large closets. Sky Suites also enjoy a good-sized bathroom, with plenty of storage, outlets and a bathtub as well. Additionally, they have access to specialty spa products called The Retreat, including soap, shampoo and body lotion.
The entire suite was decorated with warm browns and honey tones, with the occasional pop of rust red. The calming color scheme and soothing balance of textures allowed all the emphasis to be on the bright blue sea.
Although a bit older, the ship itself is a magnificent vessel, holding 3,000-plus passengers. The main atrium is beautiful, with level after level offering its own distinct décor and charm.
I enjoyed specialty dinners at The Lawn Club and Luminae and was thrilled with both experiences. The Lawn Club offered an extraordinary outdoor meal with numerous meats grilled to perfection, while Luminae kindly acquiesced to my request for two desserts after my duck confit.
While on board, I enjoyed the musical talents of the cast performing in Broadway Cabaret, the Champagne art auction and time by the pool. However, in my opinion the best show is found at Martini Bar & Crush, with bartenders showing off their skills by tossing tumblers and pouring a dozen drinks at a time. The show itself encouraged me to order a martini flight, equal parts awesome and tail-kicking.
Celebrity Reflection also offers numerous bars and lounges, specialty restaurants, silent disco night, karaoke, movies, fitness gym and thermal spa. It’s hard to see it all when you’re only on board three nights!
With so many entertaining ways to relax and enjoy, I suspect cruising will only continue to grow in popularity during the days ahead. Trust me, if I can find time to sneak in a cruise in 2025, I most certainly will!
