Taking a Trip to Europe? Consider Portugal!

by Chris Sager

Whether you make it your main destination or are there simply during a stopover, there is something for everyone in Portugal. Posted in a recent article on globaltravelerusa.com, TAP Air Portugal carried 16 million passengers last year — a new record for the country’s flagship carrier. Many factors go into why numbers are up these days, but as more people start to go, the more word gets out on the incredible number of places to visit and things to see.

Lisbon, the country’s capital, serves as the most popular tourist destination, but if you have the time, I’d recommend a trip outwards to discover some of Portugal’s hidden gems. One of my favorite all-time vacation spots, Lagos, is perfect for those looking to spend a lot of time soaking up the sun on postcard-esque beaches. The crystal-clear water along with its dramatic cliffs is incredible for surfing, kayaking, snorkeling . . . pretty much any water activity you can name.
Golf-wise, Portugal offers a litany of top-notch and well-respected courses. For those spending time in Lisbon, I wouldn’t miss a chance to play Troia, located only about an hour-and-a-half’s drive south from the airport. With other courses like Monte Rei, West Cliffs and Oitavos Dunes, Portugal’s reputation as a golf destination is becoming more and more apparent. Farther north, you can’t go wrong with a stop in Porto for it’s incredible beaches, nightlife and Port wine, of course.
As travel to Portugal becomes easier and easier, so also does justifying a stop there. Take a chance and spend a couple days there the next time you’re in Europe; you won’t be disappointed.
