Although I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a foodie, I’m smart enough to have several bona fide foodie friends. Those friendships tend to yield excellent benefits when it comes to great food and I’m more than happy to oblige. Then again, I’m fairly easygoing that way. Other than too much wasabi, horseradish or anything covered in vegemite, my taste buds typically enjoy whatever is plated in front of me.
When the Global Traveler team announced our team dinner would be hosted at Spago in Beverly Hills prior to the GT Tested Reader Survey awards, I was instantly excited. Known as Wolfgang Puck’s flagship restaurant, I’d heard so many wonderful things about the service, the ambiance and, of course, the food.
After a short uber ride from L’Ermitage Beverly Hills, with great anticipation, we walked into Spago on a busy Tuesday evening. Although the restaurant was clearly full of patrons, everyone seemed in a jovial, festive spirit. One couldn’t help but notice the 20-foot Christmas tree in the middle of the restaurant, with additional garland, decorations and twinkle lights sparkling in the background. What a beautiful setting!
Once we found our table, I was eager for the meal to commence. We kicked things off with several small bites; my favorite being the crudo (not anywhere on the menu, but it should be!). As I ordered a lychee martini drink, a light oil and balsamic salad with feta also arrived.
For my main course, I chose the sea bass with littleneck clams. After several flavorful and flakey bites, I remarked out loud, “I have no idea how long this fish soaked in butter, but I’m thrilled it did.” Each taste melted in your mouth and with simple and fresh flavors, synonymous with Wolfgang Puck’s style.
For dessert, we enjoyed a chocolate torte and custard-like ice cream with hazelnuts. The balance of both items made it easy to finish without feeling stuffed or overwhelmed.
Imagine our surprise and delight when Wolfgang Puck himself emerged from the kitchen and greeted us at the table! Such a kind gesture, especially for him to walk around our large gathering and take a moment with each of us. I’ll never forget it.
While the ambiance at Spago was outstanding and, of course, the food was phenomenal, what I’ll remember most about that evening is the way it all happened so naturally. Personally, I found myself caught up in multiple moments of joy, laughter, conversation and great food. It felt like somewhere I’d be eating every day of my life.
If by chance that’s what Master Chef Wolfgang Puck envisioned, then well done.
The next time you’re in Beverly Hills and looking for an elegant evening in an unpretentious atmosphere that will delight your taste buds, I highly recommend Spago. From my vantage point, I’d say foodies and non-foodies are always welcome.
