Chicago Auto Show opened last week at McCormick Place. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias cut a giant ribbon to signal the official start of the 116th edition of North America’s largest and longest-running auto exposition.
Debuting in 1901, CAS is now the first major auto show of the year. As such, it is the preferred place for automakers to reveal new models. Produced by Chicago Automobile Trade Association, one of the nation’s oldest metropolitan new-car dealership associations, it ran through Feb. 19.
Hundreds of vehicles are on display including luxury cars, classics, special editions and more. There was even an airplane. There are also plenty of events, including Toyota Miles Per Hour Run and First Look for Charity, a black-tie event preceding the official opening.
Electric vehicles were a big part of this year’s show. There were nine different brands of EVs at Chicago Drives Electric Education Center and Test Track, and the area was always packed.
I enjoy two very different parts of CAS. Media Preview is always my favorite day, as it provides a chance to roam the show floor without large public crowds. I also like going back when the crowd is there just to experience the buzz.
I am not looking to buy a new car, nor am I even a car enthusiast. Still, the chance to see so many vehicles in one space is a major draw for me and thousands of others.
