As I mentioned in my last blog, my husband and I recently visited Charleston. While we visited plenty of great restaurants during our trip, there were nonfood highlights, too.
We planned to visit Congaree National Park, about a two-hour drive outside of the city. Unfortunately, the day we planned to visit was rainy and called for storms. Instead, we decided to do a few indoor activities. We toured the Gibbes Museum of Art in downtown Charleston. The museum is home to works primarily by American artists, with a special focus on Southern art. Afterwards, we strolled through some of the art galleries around the museum.
Another day we drove to nearby Sullivan’s Island to check out the beach. It was hazy, so we didn’t spend much time there, but I enjoyed the quick trip.
One night we did an escape room — a recent obsession of me and my husband — in downtown Charleston. Our friend never did one before, but she was a natural puzzle solver, and we made it out with plenty of time to spare. After our escape room experience, we went on a ghost tour. With several walking tours to choose from, we opted for the Charleston Ghost and Dungeon Tour. The tour detailed Charleston’s haunted history, with a stop at The Provost Dungeon.
In North Charleston we visited The Hunley. The submarine was a key player in the Civil War as the first submarine to sink an enemy ship. The Hunley disappeared and was discovered more than a hundred years later. Today the ship is housed at Warren Lasch Conservation Center. After our visit, we grabbed a beer at the nearby Holy City Brewing. Despite the hot weather, we enjoyed our beers in the shaded outdoor seating area.
We packed a lot of activities into our trip, but there is always more to explore. I’m looking forward to my next visit!
