Barbecue at Home and Across the Country

by Katie Skrzek

Apr 23, 2020

Since spending more time at home, my husband and I have been cooking more than ever. The extra time allows for more opportunities to use our smoker. Since the shelter-in-place order began, my husband has smoked pork and beef ribs, brisket, pork tenderloin, turkey breast and chicken wings. Eating all of the delicious barbecue brings to mind our favorite barbecue restaurants we’ve visited across the country.

In Austin, Franklin Barbecue was a memorable dining experience and probably my favorite barbecue I’ve ever eaten. Diners must arrive early to grab a spot in line. Only a certain amount of barbecue is made each day, so the earlier you arrive, the more likely you are to get your pick of the menu.

We traveled to Kansas City and sampled barbecue from five different restaurants during our visit. While each spot had its highlights, my favorite overall was Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que. Ribs are my favorite type of barbecue meat, and the ones at Joe’s were perfect!

Another favorite spot from our travels is Lewis Barbecue in Charleston. The restaurant is a quick drive from our friend’s house, so we always try to stop in for a meal when we visit. In addition to a great selection of meats, Lewis offers incredible sides and interesting specials including tamales, burritos and prime rib.

I’m looking forward to #ComeBacktoTravel and experience more of the country’s great barbecue spots. In the meantime, I’m happy to dine on barbecue from the comfort of my home.

Tucked in the heart of Tuscany near the birthplace of da Vinci, Villa Petriolo is a luxurious countryside escape that blends historic restoration with modern elegance. A Small Luxury Hotels of the World member, the estate’s meticulous revival of a centuries-old villa and its surrounding properties transformed it into a haven of elegant design, hyperlocal cuisine and postcard-worthy moments. The seamless integration of its organic, regenerative agriculture revival, mimicking the once-bustling production of the property, influences its award-winning cuisine, wine production, spa products and amenities found throughout.
