Rumor has it that Brussels Airlines will begin service to New York this spring. The airline, which was formally called SN Brussels, rose from the ashes when Sabena (the flag carrier of Belgium) went belly up. Sabena flew proudly from 1923–2001. I flew Sabena in its heyday, in first class — when first class was really first class with an eight-course meal service. SN took a great deal of Sabena’s assets after bankruptcy.
Brussels coming to New York is a much-needed service to Belgium. It’s like a return to a more normal period of air travel when every country was represented. Lufthansa owns 47 percent of the carrier, so you can be sure this launch will run properly.
