Having reached six weeks since my gallbladder removal and with the okay from my doctor, I ventured to the Evanston lakefront for a run. I have done light exercise at home, including daily walks, but this was my first time really working out.

Prior to the surgery, I was enjoying a great running year. I already worked up to 9 miles a couple times a week, with shorter runs the other days. I was increasing my distance every week, running strong and feeling great. Unfortunately, my gallbladder sidelined me, negating most of my progress.

Wanting to beat the heat and possible crowds, I reached the lakefront early in the morning. I stretched a bit, walked a bit and took my first running strides. The first couple blocks were slightly uncomfortable, but soon I fell into a good rhythm.

I hoped to run two miles with one water break. I ran two miles, took a break and then ran another mile. Three miles isn’t huge, but it was a nice start.

Nothing clears my head like a good run, especially by the lake. It was warm with a nice breeze. At times, when the wind picked up, there was a slight mist from the lake. It was a clear day, allowing me to see the Chicago skyline to the south. I never get tired of that view.

My legs were a bit rubbery the rest of the day and a little sore the next day. Still, I felt better mentally and physically than I have in a long time. It’s going to take me several weeks to get back to where I was, but those three miles were major steps in the right direction.
