The inaugural season for the Athletes Unlimited Softball League culminated with the crowning of Cat Osterman as the first champion. In a season featuring powerful offenses and a lot of home runs, a dominate pitcher won the first place medal.
The unique league is for the players, by the players. With no owners or managers, the players made all the decisions from the very beginning. With team rosters changing weekly, a unique fantasy-like scoring system and a player champ instead of the usual championship team, AU came with much hype and anticipation. After five weeks of outstanding play, AU far exceeded the high expectations.
A day after the conclusion of the season, AU announced it will return to Rosemont for the 2021 season. Season 2 will again take place at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex, also home to the National Pro Fastpitch Chicago Bandits, in late August 2021.
Rosemont Mayor Bradley Stephens happily stated, “The Village of Rosemont was proud to host 57 of the best softball players and staff members of Athletes Unlimited over the past two months, and we look forward to doing it again in 2021.”
The return to Rosemont is part of the continual growth of the village as an entertainment destination. Chicago is a world-class city, but Rosemont has established itself as a viable entertainment alternative.
In closing, AU CEO and co-founder Jon Patricof stated, “We are thrilled with so many aspects of our inaugural season which included amazing play, tremendous fan engagement, a few firsts for pro sports and support for social cause organizations selected by our players throughout the season. I want to thank our talented medical team who kept our players and staff safe, as well as Mayor Stephens and the Village of Rosemont for being such a terrific partner since Day One. Our staff and players cannot wait to return next year.”
As a softball fan, I completely enjoyed the first season of AU softball, especially the opportunity to talk to these elite athletes via Zoom media sessions. I am already looking forward to next season, which should include the return of fans to the ballpark. There’s always room on my calendar for more softball.
