A group of us spent an afternoon antiquing in Naperville. While it netted cool collectibles, it also proved an interesting study of people.
We started at Affordable Antiques & More. Many different sellers filled several rooms with thousands of collectibles. The big finds were a 1960s AMF Firefighter pedal car and Mickey Mouse bobbleheads in near-perfect condition.
Antiques of Naperville was our next stop, where I was the big winner. Several vintage sports bobbleheads and a 1970s Chicago Fire football poster are now mine. We also found an old typewriter, complete with its case, in beautiful condition, among other great pieces.
Aside from each of us adding things to our collections or for resale, it was interesting to note our actions. In addition to having our individual interests, each has a unique way of searching and negotiating.
My searches consist of sports, books, music and Coca-Cola, and I’m usually done pretty quickly. Ninette seeks 1960s things, especially Flower Power-related. My buddy mostly likes Civil War items. Being largely into resale, his wife searches for the best deals and spends the most time in any store.
Hating the process, I either pay the marked price or offer my top bid. I think Nin loves the haggling more than the actual item. She enjoys the challenge. I admit, I occasionally use her to negotiate for me if I really want a deal. The married couple often uses the good guy-bad guy approach, although they switch roles for even more fun. I must say, it works well for them and it is fun to witness.
Once done, we ate lunch at Portillo’s. A great fast-food place for sandwiches and burgers, the chocolate cake is legendary. It is the most mentioned food when I talk to visiting pro athletes.

Apr 9, 2025Find Inner Peace in India, the Birthplace of Yoga
How far would you travel in pursuit of inner peace? Though the wellness industry has grown in popularity for quite a while, he business skyrocketed post-pandemic, with more and more travelers booking yoga retreats in the name of serenity, spirituality and, of course, self-care. When I decided it was zen I sought, I figured I should travel to its very birthplace: India. Though the idea of traveling in India initially felt more exciting than relaxing, I found the contrast between the bustling activity outside and the quiet reflection of my yoga practice to be an intoxicating combination.
