Aladdin and Godzilla

A couple weeks ago, on a Saturday, I made plans to see two movies in a short timeframe before heading out to watch my cousin’s band in New Hope.

The movies were ones I had been looking forward to for a long time: Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Aladdin. I have loved Godzilla since I was a young child, and Aladdin is one of my favorite Disney movies from the 1990s. This was a big day for me in terms of movies.

Godzilla was excellent. A direct sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, the new film pits the king of all monsters against some classic Toho monsters. King Ghidora, Rodan and Mothra all show up, along with several other unnamed titans. It was really cool to see these monsters I have watched since I was a child come to life in such a way. As a kaiju fan, I’m used to rubber suits and cheesy dialogue. While the dialogue was still cheesy, the monsters looked as realistic as possible.

One problem? Lots of people seem fixated on the continued inclusion of human stories. I think the latest movie had just enough humans. Their motivations and behavior made sense as well.

Aladdin is a totally different beast. For the most part, the live-action remake is faithful to the 1992 movie. The biggest changes include Will Smith portraying Genie and a new song. The movie didn’t break new ground, but it was cool to see the story come to life like this.

After the movies, we went to Havana, in New Hope, to hang out with some family members and watch my cousin’s band play. It was a great day packed with fun movies and capped off with some great live music.
