Every week, a survey question runs in eFlyer, our weekly html newsletter, and readers vote in our interactive poll. Recently, we polled readers on airline cuisine. We posed readers the following questions: “Which European carrier serves the best food?” and “Which Asian carrier serves the best food?” The contenders included British Airways, Alitalia, Air France, Lufthansa, Iberia, Asiana, Korean Air, Air India, Jet Airways, Japan Airlines, China Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines. The winners were, respectively, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines, with Air France and Korean Air in the respective second places. We only offered a handful of airlines for our readers to choose from, but a Web site recently ranked the best of the best in airline food among all the airlines. Askmen.com compiled the Top Ten list of airline food service, which included looks at the airline’s signature dishes, presentation and service. In first place was Gulf Air, the only airline with a chef on board! The rest of the top ten, in order, are Cathay Pacific Airways (who equip cabins with rice cookers, skillets and toasters), Singapore Airlines (prepared by nine of the world’s best chefs), Qantas (eight courses!), Thai Airways (who routinely change their menu), Qatar Airlines (ten courses and freshly brewed cappucino), Lufthansa (who have different renowned chefs come in and change the menu every two months), Malaysia, SWISS and Jet Airways. According to the Web article, these airlines have taken great strides in serving quality food that breaks from the traditional and focused on serving it on the finest chinas with an eye for presentation. This is fine dining in the air! Looks like airlines are trying to break the stereotypes of having some of the world’s worst food. On a different scale, I received an email yesterday that JetBlue is launching inflight taste tests with Philadelphia Cream Cheese. The “Breakfast from Heaven” giveaways begin Monday and last through the month of February. Food taste and quality are always important and it seems airlines are catching on – being in the air does not mean passengers have to sacrifice quality or taste anymore. Which is you favorite airline food? Disagree with any of the winners above? -Kimberly Krol, circulation and public relations executive
