As we’ve done in the past, the FXExpress Publications, Inc. team is in the process of collecting donations for an online charity travel auction to be held in March. As we reach out to our clients and friends, I encourage you to also consider donating if you can. Perhaps the company you work for or own can donate an item or service, or maybe you can kindly make a financial contribution, or perhaps you’re waiting until March to bid fast and furiously on a number of travel items, including hotel stays, airfare and luggage.
Most important, however, is the cause! This year the auction will be hosted on our sister publication whereverfamily.com and powered by GiveSmart, an intuitive bidding platform that helps charities around the globe, and it will benefit KAI Foundation, an organization aimed at giving back to disadvantaged communities around the world. The foundation’s first project was to build a maternity ward in Mugarameno, a village in Africa. The former clinic, which served about 20,000, had limited electricity. The Claire Kartagener Maternity Ward debuted in 2016, and today a house is being constructed for a full-time doctor and volunteers. Nearly 200 healthy and happy babies have been born there since it opened on Dec. 10, 2016. Take a look at the gallery of babies born on the foundation’s website — there’s no way it won’t bring a huge smile to your face!

Tucked into a Lake Maggiore enclave overlooking the Gulf of Colmegna, Relais Villa Porta is an idyllic place to take in a side of the Italian Lakes region that’s different from buzzy Lake Como during high season. In 1820, it was built as a hunting lodge, and by the end of the century, was transformed into an inn by Leopoldo Casnedi. Over time, the surrounding parkland was further enhanced with rare plants collected by Pietro Porta, its second owner and botanist, as well as regular guests wanting to support his efforts. This ensured the inn would ultimately sit pretty within a 10,000-square-meter park surrounding the main villa, a 19th-century Liberty-style greenhouse and original Villa Porta mosaic.
