My weekend was filled with games from three different sports. The outcomes were all the same, however.
On Saturday, I watched the Northwestern Wildcats football team beat the Fighting Illini 28–10. This game is always special to me because many of my friends went to the University of Illinois. Since my alma mater, DePaul, doesn’t have a football team, I adopted the Wildcats, and I love watching them beat the Illini. Despite the continual downpour, I stayed dry in the press box.
Sunday started with the Chicago Bears hosting the Houston Texans. The Bears, floundering of late, came out strong and never let up, cruising to a 36–7 win. I enjoyed the victory from the warm Soldier Field press box. It wasn’t raining, but the temperature was below freezing.
Immediately after the Bears game, I raced a few blocks south to Wintrust Arena to watch the DePaul women’s basketball team play city rival Loyola University. This was a battle, with the score tied with five minutes to play. DePaul pulled away, though, and won 76–67.
With three wins this weekend, it was time to celebrate. With a pizza from Village Inn and cannoli from Valli Produce, I settled into my couch to watch the rest of the NFL games through the late afternoon and evening. I fell asleep a happy and full man.

Apr 16, 2025Grand Hotel Des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz Review
Switzerland’s most storied ski town (the one, in fact, credited with pioneering the very concept of Alpine tourism), St. Moritz legendarily attracts the rich, the famous, celebutantes and the wannabes. Yet, there’s something compellingly earthy about the place, a town on a lake rich with natural environs, where winter sports and summer activities draw athletes and mountain lovers aplenty. As at the mountain restaurants (where some arrive by chairlift rather than muscle movement, and all types of diners and imbibers convene), Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz straddles the old and new, the lavish and the understated. The hotel, one of St. Moritz’s oldest, opened as a spa haven in 1864, set atop a healing mineral spring.

Apr 15, 2025Pause for a Harmonious Blend of Wellness and Nature in Hong Kong
I was illiterate when I first visited Hong Kong. Aged 17, I couldn’t understand a word of the Chinese neon signs. But 40 years later, I have changed, Hong Kong has changed, and my ability to understand the signs has changed. Now I point my phone at the unintelligible script, open a translation app, and everything magically morphs into English. The exotic becomes mundane: Shoe Store. Office Supplies. Laundry. Dentist. Insurance Broker.
