My husband and I recently spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with a group of friends. We drove up in the rain, but, luckily, it was sunny for the rest of our visit.
We stayed at The Inn at Herr Ridge. The bed and breakfast is located adjacent to a battlefield. All of our rooms were in the annex, the property’s newer building next to the original building. We had the entire space to ourselves! Since we arrived in the evening, we made our way right to the on-site casual dining restaurant and bar, The Livery, for dinner.
In the morning we met and walked over to the main building for breakfast. I had some yogurt and granola while waiting for our main dish, shrimp and grits. I’m not the biggest fan of grits, but this dish was among the best I’ve ever had.
My friend and I made massage appointments at the Gettysburg Day Spa. After breakfast, we drove to the nearby spa, where we each got a 45-minute massage. Up next, a private battlefield tour led by a former college professor of some of the people in our group. The extensive tour took us all around the key sites of the battle, culminating at Little Round Top. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, which made for a great afternoon.
After the tour we made our way back to Herr Ridge for dinner. This time we ate in the main dining room. It was a perfect, cozy meal. Our last stop of the day was a ghost tour. While the tour was a bit cheesy, especially compared to the earlier one, it was still interesting to hear about the history of the city.
We all had a great weekend and discussed plans to come back soon.
