A Sobering but Worthwhile Stop

by Kimberly Inlander

Aug 30, 2019

On a recent road trip across our great state of Pennsylvania, my fiancé and I, bound for Pittsburgh, noted a sign for the Flight 93 Memorial, dedicated to the 9/11 flight that crashed in a small town Pennsylvania thanks to the passengers on board who brought the plane down in a field as opposed to its intended target, the Pentagon.

While we didn’t have the time to detour on the way to Pittsburgh, we rearranged our departure time on Sunday so we could make the visit, and while it is a tragic event that caused the need for this monument, it was worth the stop to remember this moment in our nation’s history and to reflect on the heroes on board Flight 93.

GPS directed us to a former entrance, so we did have to backtrack some on small country roads, but we were met with a crowd when we arrived. It was a beautiful day, with the sun shining and fluffy clouds in the sky. The memorial is incredibly well-done. You can walk down to the point where the plane crashed, or you can view it from an observation deck. Inside, a permanent exhibit takes visitors through the events of the day and provides more detail about the passengers on board the plane.

Should you ever have the chance to visit, I highly recommend it.
