The journey began before I even reached South African soil. Aboard Ethiopian Airlines, elegant flight attendants in crisp white linen uniforms adorned with green and yellow scarves set the tone for what would be an unforgettable African adventure.
The crown jewel of my Cape Town experience was undoubtedly The 12 Apostles Hotel and Spa. Dramatically positioned above the Atlantic Ocean, flanked by the majestic Twelve Apostles mountain range and Table Mountain National Park, this 5-star boutique hotel offers an experience that’s uniquely Cape Town. The exceptional service from staff members Zintle, Rebecca, Thembi and Sphiso made every moment memorable, from sunrise breakfast overlooking the ocean to sunset cocktails at Leopard Bar. The hotel’s Azure Restaurant deserves special mention, where innovative Cape cuisine meets panoramic ocean views through floor-to-ceiling windows. The attention to detail in both service and presentation reflects the hotel’s commitment to excellence.
Complementing my stay at The 12 Apostles, Cape Town offers other remarkable accommodations. The iconic Mount Nelson, affectionately known as “The Pink Lady,” stands as a testament to colonial grandeur, while 21 Nettleton offers an exclusive clifftop retreat with breathtaking views of the Atlantic. The historic Vineyard Hotel, nestled in the leafy suburbs, provides a perfect blend of heritage and modern comfort. For those seeking wellness, Sante Wellness Retreat offers a sanctuary of peace and rejuvenation.
Here’s a closer look at each day of my week of discovery:
Day 1: Urban exploration started with the hop-on-hop-off bus tour to get my bearings in this magnificent city. Dinner at Salt Restaurant proved to be an excellent introduction to Cape Town’s renowned culinary scene.
Day 2: A safari experience brought me face-to-face with the legendary Big Five: buffalo, rhino, elephants, lions and leopards. It’s worth noting February, though the hottest month, provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
Day 3: The morning began with a spa treatment, followed by an emotional afternoon at Robben Island. Standing where Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe (who endured a haunting six-year silence sentence) were imprisoned provides powerful perspective on South Africa’s journey to democracy.
Day 4: Cape Wine Tours showcased the region’s world-class vintages, while the afternoon at Slave Lodge offered sobering insights into the country’s complex past. The legacy of apartheid and its impact on land ownership — with indigenous people owning only 10 percent of land after four centuries — remains a crucial contemporary issue.
Day 5: A delightful morning at Scratch Patch was followed by visits to Iziko South African National Gallery and Zeitz MOCAA, showcasing both traditional and contemporary African art.
Day 6: High tea at Mount Nelson is a must-do Cape Town experience, while dinner at Tintswalo Atlantic provided breathtaking ocean views and exceptional cuisine.
Kalk Bay deserves special mention. This charming fishing village offers everything from fresh seafood at Brass Bell to unique shopping at Big Blue T-shirts and cultural experiences at the local theater and Modern Art Gallery. Don’t miss legendary pastries at Olympia Bakery. For authentic Nigerian cuisine, McChris Restaurant offers a taste of West African flavors in the heart of Cape Town. The Biscuit Mill in Woodstock provides a hip, urban contrast to the city’s traditional attractions.
Cape Town is a city of contrasts — where luxury hotels stand alongside historic sites of struggle, where traditional markets meet modern galleries, and where the warmth of its people helps bridge the gaps of a complex past. It’s a destination that demands not just a visit but thoughtful engagement with its history, culture and future.
