I had a two-hour layover at Denver International Airport (DEN) this past weekend. I usually spend my time at this airport running from one end of the terminal to the other, catching a connecting flight to Aspen (ASE), or Los Angeles (LAX). This time I was returning from Los Angeles with time to spare — what to do?
I recalled whizzing by the main section of DEN where there are stores and restaurants. I strolled around and saw two sit-down restaurants. I opted for Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery and was pleasantly surprised. The bar was filled with anxious Denver Broncos fans watching their team play. The restaurant continued past the bar. I felt like I could have been downtown in any city, minus the carry-on luggage. Passengers were wining and dining on white tablecloth tables, looking very satisfied with their meals. I was quite satisfied with my choice of chopped chicken salad and pale ale beer.
After leaving the restaurant, I saw a few other sit-down options, including a restaurant one level up. With the amount of time transit passengers have in airports, it’s a pity we don’t see airports advertising their amenities in books read by frequent travelers. I would love to know more about the dining options and activities airports offer, rather than always sitting in a lounge. It would be a great way for airports to help boost their revenue!
