Traveling by train is one of the easiest ways to get from one destination to another, and it’s also one of the most scenic. These seven world-renowned train journeys through Scotland, Mongolia, India, Canada and more, offer some of the most incredible sights along the way.

See Scotland from the windows of The Jacobite steam train, which runs 83 miles from Fort William to Mallaig through the Highland’s beautiful countryside and coasts. Harry Potter fans will recognize the Glenfinnan viaduct, made famous by the films. Passengers can enjoy afternoon tea and a cheese box on board.

Ride the world’s longest railway line 5,752 miles through Russia, Mongolia and China, while enjoying views of St. Petersburg, the Ural Mountains, Lake Baikal, Ulaanbaatar and other notable landmarks. Tickets cost around $165, and passengers can enjoy traditional borscht on board.

For those who don’t fear heights, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the highest train journey in the world. Built over four years, the route takes you three miles above sea level through permafrost and thin air, for which oxygen outlets are provided onboard. The entire journey is more than 2,332 miles long, running from Beijing to Lhasa.

Traverse parts of India by way of the Kalka Shimla Railway — a route so outstanding it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The railway takes passengers to the foothills of the Himalayas via 102 tunnels and 889 bridges. The 59-mile journey costs less than $2 and Indian cuisine is available onboard.

Offering an alternative to hiking the Inca Trail, the Cusco-Machu Picchu rail route takes passengers to a station five miles from the renowned ruins of Machu Picchu, passing colorful villages and the Andean foothills. The 55-mile scenic journey includes snacks and costs only around $85.

Japan is known for its high-speed, comfortable bullet trains, also known as Shinkansen. One of the most notable train journeys is the Tokaido route from Tokyo to Kyoto, which offers breathtaking views of Mt. Fuji — the highest peak in Japan. The 318-mile journey costs around $127 and includes Bento lunchboxes.

The Rocky Mountaineer journey in Canada is so beautiful, the train features glass-domed roofs so passengers can take in the trees, Canadian Rockies and famous Spiral Tunnels. The entire route is more than 525 miles long, running from Vancouver to Banff, and costs around $1,310 including a Wild British Columbia Salmon meal.
