Dublin, Cork, Galway and other notable Irish towns and cities have their charms, but to experience the real Ireland, you need to head to its smaller, lesser-known destinations. Here are a few of our favorites.
Carlingford, County Louth
Carlingsford is a coastal town in northern County Louth, situated on the southern shore of Carlingford Lough. It maintains its medieval layout, marked by narrow lanes and small streets like Tholsel Street, where the last of the medieval walled town’s gates and a 16th-century house remain. King John’s Castle and Dominican Friary are must-sees, and if you visit in August you can attend the annual Carlingford Oyster Festival.
Kenmare, County Kerry
Kenmare is a small town in the south of County Kerry, situated at the head of Kenmare Bay. The town itself was laid out in 1670, but the surrounding area has more ancient roots. One of the largest stone circles in the southwest region of Ireland is close to the town, dating back to the Bronze Age. The town sits on the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Beara, making it easy to access. The town boasts charming stone cottages, colorful gardens and several quintessential Irish pubs.
Dingle, County Kerry
Dingle is a quaint hilltop port town in County Kerry and the only town on the Dingle Peninsula. Those who have seen the romantic comedy Leap Year may remember this charming destination. Dingle is a major fishing port, so fresh seafood is plentiful, as is live traditional Irish music. Check out the neo-Gothic St. Mary’s church, built in 1862, Dingle Distillery and a game of Gaelic football.
Lismore, County Waterford
Nestled at the foot of the Knockmealdown Mountain, Lismore is a small, historic town in Waterford, home to Waterford crystal. The town’s main attraction is an impressive 800-year-old medieval castle, built on a steep hill offering sweeping views of the town and neighboring Blackwater Valley.
Bantry, County Cork
Bantry sits on the coast of West County Cork at the head of Bantry Bay. The Beara Peninsula is to the northwest and Sheep’s Head is also nearby, offering great hiking and walking trails. The main town square features colorful cottages, a lively weekly market and community functions. Attractions of note include the large Bantry House, built in 1739 for a historic notable family, the Bantry Market House and the beautiful Parish Churches.
